Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

Located in the Plaza de la Paz, stands the imposing Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, which together with the Palacio de los Solazar and the Town Hall, form a complex of incalculable architectural value.

The Church occupies an entire side of the square, raised above it, so its door is accessed through ramps and stairs. This temple of Renaissance and Baroque style and whose construction lasted during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, recognized as a National Monument. Another jewel of the religious art of Labastida.

It is a Renaissance building from the 16th century with a nave with five sections. The entrance to the temple is of great monumentality. It is located on the southern wall and the complex is made up of a large semicircular arch that shelters the monumental façade where the doors open. These are two twin lintelled openings flanked by Ionic columns and then, on this part, stands a monumental double storey superimposed with Corinthian columns, lintelled windows, curved pediments and a niche with the statue of the Virgin. In the 18th century, the octagonal baroque sacristy was built.

This church has a tall and well decorated bell tower, also Baroque. Inside, we have to look at the great baroque altarpiece, the organ, the choir and the carving of the Virgin of Our Lady of Toloño.

The set, built in sandstone well cut in ashlars, has several differentiated volumes. The solid tower has a polygonal floor plan and is arranged in four staggered volumes topped with a dome, exceeding 54 meters in total.

The eighth, a true wonder where the new sacristy is housed, has an octagonal floor plan and is topped by an impressive crest. The monumental portal of the church is a magnificent exponent of the classicism prevailing in the 17th century and resembles an altarpiece carved in stone.

Inside, the church keeps magnificent baroque altarpieces, highlighting its main altarpiece, dedicated to the Assumption, in the Churrigueresque Gothic style from the end of the 17th century. In addition to the rich carvings and paintings that adorn the entire temple, the baroque choir stalls, carved in high-quality walnut wood, and a splendid 16th-century organ that is considered one of the most valuable in the Basque Country are noteworthy.

Currently, it also houses the Parish Museum with different objects for worship and images.
